Rwanda has become the most recent African nation to agree to receive deported immigrants from the Trump Administration.
Recently, Rwanda also signed a Trump White House sponsored peace deal with DR Congo. Rwanda, a country of some 13 million people lies in the Great Lakes Region.
Tuesday, a Rwanda spokesman, Yolande Makolo, confirmed that at least 250 migrants are on their way to the east African country. Rwanda has now become the third African nation to agree to accept deportees from the Trump Administration following South Sudan and Eswatini.
In a statement, spokesman Makolo said, “Rwanda has agreed with the United States to accept up to 250 migrants, in part because nearly every Rwandan family has experienced the hardships of displacement, and our societal values are founded on reintegration and rehabilitation.Under the agreement, Rwanda has the ability to approve each individual proposed for resettlement.Those approved will be provided with workforce training, healthcare, and accommodation support to jumpstart their lives in Rwanda, giving them the opportunity to contribute to one of the fastest-growing economies in the world over the last decade.”
Rwanda’s deal with Washington follows a failed deal with the UK, where Rwanda was to receive deportees from the UK. That agreement, made with the former Conservative government, was cancelled after the Conservative government lost the last election. Before its collapse, the UK deal faced legal challenges and strong criticism.
Reportedly, Rwanda will be compensated in the deal by an undisclosed grant from the US. Rwandan President Paul Kagame has long been accused of human rights violations and political repression.
Rwandan analyst, Gonzaga Muganwa, said, “appeasing President Trump pays.This agreement enhances Rwanda’s strategic interest of having good relationships with the Trump administration.”
