Jesse Jackson Jr., Democratic Congressman from Illinois is the anonymous “Senate Candidate No. 5” whose representatives allegedly offered Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich up to $1 million to name him Barack Obama’s successor to the U.S. Senate, ABC News quoting federal law enforcement sources, is reporting.
Separately, Jackson has said he is not a target of the Blagojevich investigation. Rep. Jackson’s office had not returned a phone call from The Black Star News as of this afternoon.
The government’s complaint states that Gov. Blagojevich “stated he might be able to cut a deal with Senate Candidate 5 that provided Rod Blagojevich” with something “tangible up front,” ABC News reports.
Jackson said he has been contacted by the FBI to “come in and share with them my insights and thoughts about the selection process.” Jackson said he did not know whether he was “Candidate No. 5,” referred to by the government. Rep. Jackson’s father is Rev. Jesse Jackson, the civil rights leader.
Gov. Blagojevich was arrested yesterday on several charges, including that he sought a bribe in return for naming someone to fill Obama’s vacant senate seat. He met with Rep. Jackson Monday although the subject of the discussion has not been revealed.
