BALTIMORE, MD – The Afro-Vegan Society (AVS) is celebrating Veguary, a FREE month-long celebration of Black vegan history, culture, diversity, and progress, throughout the month of February. The 29-day program encourages members of the Black community to try plant-based eating during the month of February. Veguary is purposefully situated during Black History Month to highlight the contributions of Black vegan trailblazers while sharing the many benefits of plant-based eating and vegan living in Black communities.
According to Afro-Vegan Society founder Brenda Sanders, “Afro-Vegan Society’s Veguary program is designed to create a pathway to vegan living for Black folks who are interested in making a lifestyle change but need support from a community that understands and centers the Black experience.”
Plant-based traditions have been prominent in cultures throughout the African Diaspora for centuries. In the US, civil rights leaders like Dick Gregory were among the first to connect our society’s systemic racial violence with the cruelty of the animal agriculture industry.
Today, African Americans are the fastest growing population of new vegans.
