Elon Musk says he’s started a new political party called the “America Party” He said he would do this if President Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” passed. Musk trashes the bill for adding trillions to America’s debt. “You want a new political party, and you shall have it!” Musk wrote on X. He calls the current system waste and graft, a one party system. “Today I form the America Party to give you back your freedom,” he added. Musk ran a poll on July 4 asking followers if he should start the party.
Over 65% of 1.2 million respondents said yes.

He ran a poll to see if people wanted a new party for the 80% in the middle. Musk says many don’t feel represented by Republicans or Democrats. He’s going to take on Republicans who backed Trump’s big spending bill. Musk calls them out for supporting massive debt increases. He’s going to defeat them in next year’s primaries. Musk is going to target two or three Senate seats. He’s also going to go after eight to ten House districts. He wants those seats to swing major congressional votes. Musk hasn’t shared a policy platform yet. He’s reposting followers suggesting debt cuts and spending control. He’s for cutting waste and reckless government spending. He says America needs real representation for the middle that’s being ignored. He’s going to give voters an alternative to both parties.

Ellon used to be a Democrat Funded Trump’s 2024 Campaign
He was the biggest donor, funding from and other republicans through America PAC. Mast spoke at Trump’s big rallies in front of thousands. Trump made Musk head of DOGE, showing how close they were. Musk cut “waste” by firing thousand of federal employees. Real relationship fell apart when Musk opposed Trump’s big spending bill. “I think bill can be big or beautiful,” Musk told CBSE news in May. He called the bill “pork-filled” and told followers to stop it. Musk told people to call their senators and Congressmen to kill the bill.

The America Party has a long, hard road ahead in America’s two party system. Despite and X poll showing strong support for the Idea, history shows it is not easy to create viable alternative to a democratic and Republican parties. The democratic and Republican parties have controlled American politics for a long time. There is little room for third party candidates to get traction.
Even high profile efforts like former 2020 democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang’s forward party have seen limited success. In June young showed interest in teaming up with Musk, thinking their combined clout might make a difference. He praised Musk’s ability to build company from scratch and said many Americans are ready for something new. “Elon has founded world class company from an idea, and there is a huge appetite for something new,” Yang told Paletico. He also added he’d worked with musk and anyone serious about a new path.
Musk Faces Tough History of Third Party Efforts
A strong third party could break over century of two party rule. Musk is not the first to try this. Theodore Roosevelt split from Republican in 1992. He won 19% of the popular vote and 88 electoral votes. Ross Perot, another billionaire, tried in 1992. He won 19% of popular vote but no electoral votes. He later created the reform party.
Musk Billion Meets Ballot Reality
Musk says he will not aim for an a nationwide win. He plans to flip a few house and Senate seats. He wants to apply focused effort in key races. He believed that this strategy could sway close votes. A massive campaign fund could help him. Parties spends billion to get candidates elected. OpenSecret says spending reached nearly 16 billion dollar in 2024. Musk was the biggest donor in that cycle he gave 291 million dollar to the Republican candidates. But money alone cannot decide the election. For a court seat. This happened despite 25 million dollar in Musk’s spending.

Can Musk’s American party Succeed? Experts Doubt it
Jenna Bednar, a political scientist at the University of Michigan, weighted in. She told TimesofIndia.com “third parties have huge hurdles in the US” she said “musk loves big plans and wants a national party”. And she added “I don’t see it becoming a serious challenger to the two parties.” But she also has another part for Musk. Also said he could use his wealth to back primary challengers. He could make centrist republican feel safe from Trump. This could make the Republicans Party. But Bednar warned about Musk’s short attention spam. She said the first primaries are in March 2026. He said he might lose interest by then.
