Hailed as “a leading figure among the generation of Cuban artists presently enriching the international jazz scene” by the New York City Jazz Record, renowned Afro-Cuban
jazz saxophonist-composer Yosvany Terry headlines the Zinc Bar in
Greenwich Village on Wednesday, July 25 and Thursday July 26.
He will perform works from his latest CD Today’s Opinion (Criss Cross) with the Yosvany Terry Quintet. Classically trained in his native Cuba, Terry took the New York City jazz scene by storm when he moved to Manhattan in 1999. He seamlessly melds Latin sounds with post-bop jazz and African polyrhythms, creating a fresh new sound that moves jazz a step ahead. The altoist and master chekére player will be joined for the performance by Obed Calvaire (drums), Michael Rodriguez (trumpet), Osmany Paredes (piano) and his brother Yunior Terry (bass).
Terry’s latest release, Today’s Opinion has been called, “a dazzling new CD grounded in both distinct formal traditions and abstract ideas,” by Larry Blumenfeld of the Wall Street Journal. The album, which boasts nine pieces composed by Terry, is available on iTunes and Amazon.com and will be available for purchase at the Zinc Bar performances. More information on the album and Terry can be found at www.yosvanyterry.com.
The Yosvany Terry Quintet will perform at 9:00 pm, 10:30 pm and midnight on July 25 and at 7:00 pm and 8:30 pm on July 26. Tickets are $15 with the exception of the 7:00 pm performance, which is $10.
