More than 2,700 white women have sent a letter to Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer with a clear message: Listen to Black women, and fire the officers who killed Breonna Taylor.

“No matter what you do next, our city cannot move forward with moral integrity and faith in a better future without the firing of the officers involved in Breonna’s death,” the letter states.

“There is no leaping over Breonna Taylor’s body to the broader changes you and we know are necessary. Those are tied together and cannot be pried apart.”

The letter, sent to Fischer late Tuesday night, is co-signed by more than 400 women from Louisville and 2,300 others from across the U.S. Organizers hope more will add their names and inspire more white women to “take action” around Taylor’s fatal police shooting March 13.

As outlined in the letter, co-signers believe silence from white people — and white women, whose safety has been “used to justify calls for law and order” — has allowed race-based inequities and violence to fester.

The white women who signed say they’re refusing to be silent. Instead, they’re calling on Fischer to take the steps that Black women are demanding.

“Listen to Black women like Breonna’s mother,” it states. “Listen to the Black women who are leading on the streets, putting their own lives at risk crying out for justice. Listen to the Black women who work every day to make this a better community, who tend to all the ways that the legacy of racism, in this community and communities across the country, have left people behind.”

Taylor, 26, was shot and killed by Louisville Metro Police who broke down her door after midnight March 13 to serve a signed no-knock search warrant in connection with a narcotics investigation based about 10 miles away.
