Viola Plummer, the militant co-founder and chairwoman of the December 12th Movement, know as an ardent activist and educator, will be laid to rest on Jan. 27 after funeral services at the House of the Lord Church, located at 415 Atlantic Avenue, in Brooklyn. Plummer founded the December 12 Movement, in 1986, long with Sonny Carson, Coltrane Chimurenga, Elombe Brath, and Father Lucas.
The wake for Sista Plummer takes place on Jan 26, at at J. Foster Phillips Funeral Home located at 179-24 Linden Boulevard, in St. Albans, Queens.
Plummer, a former chief of staff to Brooklyn Assemblyman and City Council Member Charles Barron, reportedly passed on Jan. 15. She was 86.
A long-time activist, in the struggle for Black Liberation, Plummer, and the December 12th Movement, are known for their vigorous advocacy for African Peoples including in championing international causes such as speaking out against Western Imperialism and militarism, particularly in places like Cuba, Haiti, Grenada, Venezuela, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.
The stated goal of Plummer’s December 12th Movement is to foster understanding and unity in the Black communities—as a means of tackling the racism and institutional problems plaguing our people.
Locally, in the New York City area, Plummer, and her December 12 Movement, have been active in addressing many issues such as: guns violence, problems in our school system, gentrification, police brutality and murder and Reparations.
Plummer also ran the important music venue know as Sistas’ Place, where important jazz musicians perform. The motto of Sistas’ Palace is: Culture Is A Weapon!
An important piece of advice, for young people, Plummer once shared was in a 2016 interview with AmNews when she said, “It is important for our young people to know that you have to fight for justice, and that they, too, have a role to play in securing our rights for self-determination.”
