A press conference and vigil will be held today to protest the killing of Carl Dorsey by a Newark police detective. It will be held Monday, September 19, 2022, 5:00pm at the Federal Building, 970 Broad Street, Newark, NJ.
The press conference is being called by the People’s Organization For Progress (POP). Speaking at the event will be members of Carl Dorsey’s family, family members of other police brutality victims, and community activists.
POP is calling for the firing of the detective that killed Dorsey, a report from the NJ State Attorney General on the investigation into Mr Dorsey’s death, an investigation into his death by the U.S. Attorney for New Jersey and Department of Justice, and the establishment of police review boards in Newark and other municipalities with subpoena and investigatory powers.
Among those speaking will be the stepfather and sister of Mr Dorsey, a representative of the Rodwell and Spivey brothers who were victims of racial profiling by Newark police, and Natacha Panell, the sister of Phillip Panell who was killed by Teaneck police. The first episode of a nationally televised four part documentary on the death of Phillip Panell was shown yesterday.
The event today will mark the re-start of the POP Justice Mondays protests against police brutality. These demonstrations were held every Monday at the Federal building but were temporarily suspended due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.
They began February, 2015 in response to the police killings of Abdul Kamal, Kashad Ashford, and Jerome Reid. There have been a total of 300 Justice Mondays protests over the past seven years.
“We will resume our Justice Monday protests today to demand justice for Carl Dorsey and all victims of police brutality,” stated Lawrence Hamm, Chairman, People’s Organization For Progress.
