According to recent estimates, the Black-white employment gap is as large as at least one million jobs.

In a new report published today, Algernon Austin makes the case that there is more to the story of economic inequality than just the number of jobs – that, in fact, Black America also needs both better quality and more types of jobs.

Austin proposes policy solutions to each of these three obstacles, as well as argues why none of these three problems can be ignored if we want to achieve racial equity.

The report finds that about 60 percent of Black-white wage income inequality is due to insufficient work and about 40 percent is due to lower wages. Policy solutions include: subsidized employment programs, decisive action from the Federal Reserve, more robust labor reforms, and more.
