On Tuesday, October 11, 2005 from 6:00 PM until 10:00 PM, the Board of Directors of Heritage Health and Housing celebrates the organization’s 35th Anniversary with an opulent fundraising gala at Tavern on the Green, Central Park West at West 67th Street.
Chaired by Dr. Richard & Mrs. Terrie Payne, the upscale affair, which kicks off with a cocktail reception followed by an appetizing dinning experience, will include a performance by guest artist Karman Michaels, and a silent auction. Honorary chairs for this year affair are actress and activist, Ruby Dee; New York City’s first African American Mayor, Honorable David Dinkins and his wife Joyce Dinkins.
In addition to live music, a festive cocktail reception and an assortment of wonderful auction items, Heritage Health and Housing will also include an award ceremony. This year’s honorees are: Dr. Beny J. Primm, President of URI & Executive Director of Addiction Research & Treatment Corporation; Ruth Levell, founder of Harlem National Alliance for the Mentally Ill; Richard Davis, former Vice President, Community Relations, Amalgamated Bank; and the Honorable Gale Brewer, New York City Council member.
Heritage Health and Housing is a private, non-profit health care, community service and development agency. Heritage provides outpatient medical services, as well as service-enriched housing for the homeless, this includes individuals with special needs, particularly those with mental illness, persons living with AIDS, ex-offenders, persons suffering with addiction disorders, and those who lack access to safe, decent affordable housing. A principal goal for the agency is to create opportunities for healing, helping individuals take control of their lives and become self-sufficient, functioning and contributing members of the community.
The organization owns and operates four residences, and 12 separate residential programs, while providing consumer services for another, and has two more in development. In all of its housing, the organization provides restorative services through a continuum of care, from around-the-clock supervision to apartments that offer semi-independent and fully independent living.
In addition, Heritage Health and Housing also runs various neighborhood initiatives such as food distribution and its community renewal initiative which is revitalizing commercial space on Amsterdam Avenue from 135th Street to 155th Streets, and recently expanded to include portions of 145th Street, St Nicholas Avenue and Broadway.
