YONKERS, NY — Today, Congressman Jamaal Bowman announced his support for Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard in her re-election campaign in Mount Vernon, NY.

“Mayor Patterson-Howard has been a fighter for Mount Vernon since she got into office. From opening Memorial Field, to supporting Black businesses and professionals, to advocating for resources to solve the sewage problem once and for all, Mayor Patterson-Howard has been hard-working and collaborative. She provides the stability necessary to move Mount Vernon into the future,” said Congressman Bowman.

Mayor Patterson-Howard has long been an advocate for Mount Vernon. When she served as Executive Director for the Yonkers, NY YMCA from 2004 to 2009, she was instrumental in strengthening the organization’s youth development and healthy living programs. Patterson-Howard also served as the Commissioner of Planning and Community Development and as the Executive Director of the Urban Renewal Agency. As mayor, her dedication to Mount Vernon has continued. In 2022, she secured the largest environmental justice grant anywhere in the country. Mayor Patterson-Howard is also the newly elected president of the African American Mayors Association.

“Congressman Bowman always puts Mount Vernon first! In DC, he has been a key ally and advocate for our families and has delivered on the needs of our community. I am grateful for his constant and unwavering dedication to our city and am thankful for his endorsement. I look forward to continuing our work in expanding access to human services, ensuring public safety, and fighting for climate justice and infrastructure,” Mayor Patterson-Howard said in response to the endorsement.

Mayor Patterson-Howard made history when she was elected the first female mayor in Mount Vernon, and the first woman of color elected mayor in Westchester County. She is poised to make history again; Patterson-Howard would be the first mayor of Mount Vernon to be elected to a consecutive term in 20 years. It is clear that Mount Vernon will soar under Mayor Patterson-Howard’s strong leadership.
