Baltimore, MD (Tuesday, May 21) – Civil rights advocates and attorneys including Ben Crump, Angela Rye and Monique Pressley will hold a press conference in support of former Baltimore City state attorney Marilyn Mosby ahead of her sentencing in U.S. District Court. Mosby, who was Baltimore’s lead prosecutor from 2015 until last year, could face up to 40 years in prison following a wrongful conviction on perjury and mortgage fraud charges over the use of her own retirement funds.

Mosby, who gained national support over her response into the police killing of Freddie Gray, has been the target of ultra-conservative groups aimed at attacking Black female prosecutors. Her investigation, charges, and trial marked the first time a someone in the United States came under legal scrutiny for using money in their own retirement account. Mosby’s conviction has sparked outrage, especially among civil rights leaders, who have pointed out the attacks on a Black prosecutor who successfully overturned convictions related to the corrupt Gun Trace Task Force. Fourteen of the nation’s leading civil rights organizations recently signed a letter condemning the sentencing, while the #Justice4MarilynMosby petition has received more than 50,000 signatures.
