Today, July 26, 2021, leaders of the Poor People’s Campaign and their allies will engage in nonviolent direct action at U.S. Senate offices across the nation. These actions are part of a “Season of Nonviolent Direct Action,” a coordinated campaign of nonviolent moral actions aimed at abolishing the filibuster, protecting voting rights and establishing a $15 minimum wage.

The press conference will be held at Senator Chuck Schumer’s Office at 767 Third Avenue NY, NY 10017 (the park just off Third Avenue on 48th Street near Senator Schumer’s office).

New York Poor People’s Campaign leaders from across NYC and NYS, will be joined by allies from partner organizations. Speakers in New York City will include Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis, the national co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign, local faith and community leaders, as well as personal testimonials from directly impacted residents and more.

Understanding the urgency of the hour and the peril facing our voting rights and ultimately our democracy, Rev. Theoharis will also join faith leaders and others in non-violent moral direct action in front of 780 Third Avenue as Congress has yet to meet the demands of the Poor People’s Campaign which are:

(1) End the Filibuster

(2) Pass all provisions of the For the People Act

(3) Fully restore the 1965 Voting Rights Act

(4) Raise the federal minimum wage to $15/hr
