Outlander Season 7 Episode 12 Review
At the beginning of the episode, Jamie and John have an intense face-to-face. John discloses to Jamie that he has had “carnal knowledge” of his wife. This turns out to be the name for the episode as well, “Carnal Knowledge”. However, it is not the swiftest revelation. Turns out, Jamie has had enough of the chit-chat and is ready to unleash his fury. With a mix of anger and disbelief, he lashes out at John. Under the presumption that John is interested in men, Jamie finds it extremely unbelievable. The talk goes off into a brawl between the two men, where Jamie dominates. John mostly holds it off, and faces the fury, as he shows remorse for his actions towards his friend. He doesn’t fight back, as he believes he deserves the punishment. In between this mayhem, the rebels intervene in the fight, and Jamie lets them have John.
With the next scene focusing on the big revelation about William’s parentage, there is even more drama afoot. He is a lot angry and resentful as he learns that his father is Jamie. Going up to Claire, he confronts her about the truth, and why she hid it from him. Although it is justified for him to be angry, he doesn’t understand the situation and reacts harshly. With his inner turmoil, he cannot manage to grasp reality and ends up punching a mirror. This scene is also shot with Jamie punching John in the next shot immediately, reflecting on the similar behavior of the father and the child.
This is not the only misery added to his life right now. He also learns that Rachel and Young Ian are engaged. This sends him off to another zone of jealousy and fury. Unable to cope with it, he lashes out at Young Ian about his own father, Jamie. However, Ian defends Jamie at his best and keeps his cool. It reflects on his similar anger and resentment toward his own father.
Along with this, it also showcases the disappointment that both the members are feeling at the same moment in the episode. Meanwhile, Ian and Rachel could not get married in the Quaker tradition, and are somewhat disappointed. However, the couple knows that they will get married, no matter what. William is heartbroken at this news but also knows there is not much he can do.
The episode also contains a lot of passion and romance, with Jamie finally reuniting with Claire. Initially, there is a lot of jealousy and resentment as he confronts her about the events that have transpired in his absence. While she explains her side of the picture and resolves the accusations, it seems Jamie does seem to understand eventually. For Claire too, it is an extremely intense moment, having seen her lover after so long. Assuming that he was no more, she had to force herself to move on.
Although it seems that Jamie eventually comes to a sense of forgiveness, it is clear that it’ll take time for complete acceptance of the situation. However, from Claire’s perspective, things have been unexpected and filled with grief. Seeing her lover after such a long time stirs up old feelings, and she longs for the same. Believing that he was no more, she had to endure a lot of grief by herself. However, now that he was in front of her, she could finally be herself. With their physical reunion, this scene was filled with passion and romance. Although there are bits of untold emotional distress, the couple would have to resolve those later in the episodes.
The next scene focuses on John trying to escape the rebels while Jamie and Claire have their passionate reunion at last. While Jamie and Claire find solace in each other, John has to save his life from the rebels. The tribe is fixated on hanging him, and he manages to escape with Denzell Hunter’s aid. It seemed like he was about to be shot, while the couple was reliving in each other after a long time. There is a lot of sympathy for John at this moment as he makes his way out of this turmoil. With only Hunter by his side, he must make amends in the mayhem of the Fraser family. Although the episode delivers the message that Jamie and Claire may have reconciled, it certainly keeps the ending open for discussion. With a lot of new information out and the friendship between John and Jamie now sour, things will be escalating quickly. It will be interesting to watch how the characters come to terms with all the recent events that have unfolded.
