NEW YORK, NY – Today, a slate of local elected officials from cities within the 16th congressional district have endorsed Congressman Bowman for re-election. Mamaroneck Mayor Tom Murphy, Hastings-on-Hudson Mayor Nicola Armacost, Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard, New Rochelle Councilwoman Martha Lopez, Mount Vernon City Council President Derrick Thompson, and New Rochelle City Councilwoman Yadira Ramos-Herbert, were amongst the group of local leaders that came together to show their support for Rep. Jamaal Bowman.

“I am proud to receive the endorsement of these mayors and local electeds as I seek a second term in Congress,” said Congressman Jamaal Bowman. “As the saying goes; all politics is local and I more than anyone, know that local leaders are at the forefront of our communities and are the most attuned to their specific needs. I am excited to continue working with local leaders like Mayor Murphy, Mayor Armacost, Mayor Patterson-Howard, and Councilmembers Lopez, Thompson, and Ramos-Herbert to bring the resources and funding our people need. Together, I know we will continue delivering for our district, and fighting for our future.”

The latest elected officials to endorse Bowman explained their reasons for supporting the former teacher and principal.

“I am proud to endorse Jamaal Bowman’s re-election to congress. Since being elected, Jamaal and I have worked closely together to serve the people of Mamaroneck. During our most difficult hour which was hurricane Ida, Jamaal didn’t just show up for the press conference, he walked the community to really understand the damage and talk to small business owners. The next day I saw Jamaal at the distribution center, no cameras, just helping to organize and distribute much-needed goods to people who’ve lost everything. He has since followed up with the army corps of engineers and helped secure 88 million dollars in flood mitigation funds for Mamaroneck. I have complete confidence in Jamaal’s ability to continue to serve his district, including the new areas, very well. It is an honor to support Jamaal’s re-election to Congress,” said Mamaroneck Mayor Tom Murphy.

“I am proud to endorse Congressman Jamaal Bowman for re-election in New York’s 16th Congressional District. Rep. Bowman has been exactly the type of representative the people of Hastings-on-Hudson and of his district need. In Congress, he fought to bring more vaccine and testing sites to our residents when we needed them the most. He advocated for an increase in the child tax credit and to protect education spending from budget cuts for our kids and he was the author of the Green New Deal for Public Schools. He has been a vocal advocate for increased investment in public transportation and in addressing climate change. He has visited Hastings-on-Hudson many times, and made a point to witness firsthand the devastation Hurricane Ida caused in our small businesses. Rep. Bowman really does care about us, which is why I am delighted to support his run for a second term in Congress and why I encourage everyone to get out and vote for him on June 28th,” said Hastings-on-Hudson Mayor Nicola Armacost.

“Congressman Bowman has taken the time to truly understand the needs of his district. His focus on advocating for marginalized and underserved members of this community has been admirable. His work on securing 1.5 million for our sewers has been a testament to that advocacy. I look forward to working with him around securing more resources for public safety, social services, infrastructure, economic empowerment, and rebuilding our families. I strongly endorse Congressman Bowman,” said Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard.

“Jamaal Bowman is a Congressman who cares about the people he serves. I often see him speaking with elected officials and residents to get an understanding of the needs within the community. For far too long people have been running for office just to hold a seat and do nothing for the residents. It is refreshing to see someone amongst the people actually doing the work. Jamaal Bowman has my VOTE and full support going forward. Our communities need elected officials who are unafraid to lead and stand alone when necessary. (Don’t just vote for him because he’s Black, vote for him because he has your back). Re-Elect Jamaal Bowman for Congress,” said City Council President Derrick Thompson of Mount Vernon, NY.

“I am proud to endorse Congressman Jamaal Bowman (NY-16) in his re-election. As a first-time Congressmember, Jamaal Bowman has given Black, Latino, and voters at large from New Rochelle a voice in Congress. When Hurricane Ida devastated our communities, Rep. Bowman fought for economic development and to get our communities the resources and funding they needed to rebuild their homes and small businesses. When our right to vote was on the line, he joined activists in a protest outside the Capitol and was arrested for it. And when New Rochelle needed more funding to make our streets safer and build a new park, Rep. Bowman worked with others in Congress to secure that funding. Rep. Bowman has always put our communities, families, kids, and small minority-owned businesses at the forefront. There is no doubt that Congressman Jamaal Bowman has New Rochelle’s best interest at heart, which is why I am proud to endorse his re-election campaign,” said New Rochelle Councilwoman Martha Lopez.

“I am proud to endorse Congressman Jamaal Bowman for NY-16. As our representative in DC, Congressman Bowman has always been vocal about the needs of our communities and has advocated to bring in the funds needed for our community. By far though, one of the most impactful achievements of Rep. Bowman in the last year has been his advocacy for the New Rochelle LINC Project. Rep. Bowman fought for our city to ensure we received a nearly $12 million grant needed to fund this project. He is incredibly accessible to all members of our community. I am proud to call him my Congressmember and look forward to working with him in his next term in Congress,” said New Rochelle City Councilwoman Yadira Ramos Herbert.

The slate of endorsement joins the recent surge of support that Rep. Bowman has received from some of the top organizations and groups in New York, including the Working Families Party, Community Voices Heard, CWA, The Jewish Vote, and Planned Parenthood Action Fund. The endorsement also adds to the support Rep. Bowman has earned from NY Senators Schumer, Senator Gillibrand, and Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley.

In the last year, Rep. Bowman has been fighting for the voices of his constituents in DC. His efforts have translated into real tangible results within his district. For Mamaroneck, Rep. Bowman was able to secure over $300,000 in funding for renovations and energy-efficiency upgrades for the Mamaroneck Senior Center. In Hastings-on-Hudson, he visited multiple small businesses following Hurricane Ida and made economic development a core of his efforts. For Mount Vernon, he secured $1.5 million for the Sewage Cleanup Project to Promote Equity and Resilience. And for New Rochelle, he secured $500,000 for the Educational Achievement Gap Project in the local YMCA and over $13 million to implement street, bicycle, and pedestrian improvements through the New Rochelle LINC Project.

Immediately after the landing of Hurricane Ida, Rep. Bowman also used his congressional power to secure FEMA resources to the district. He sent a letter to President Biden a letter asking him to expedite approval of the Major Disaster Declaration for New York State and a separate letter asking him to grant Governor Hochul’s request for federal resources. His efforts help secure more than $19 million from FEMA for individual and household assistance to Bronx residents. He also secured over $531.4 million in funding for local and county government in NY-16 through the American Rescue Plan, so they can provide essential services during the pandemic and limit the spread of COVID.
