The family of the late Eng. Barbara Allimadi will formally launch a foundation in her name on May 2, 2021 to honor the legacy of this tireless fighter for national liberation and for women’s and youth rights.
The Barbara Allimadi Foundation (BAF) will be launched at a luncheon event at the Palema Crown Hotel at 9 AM in Gulu City during which retired Gen. Mugisha Muntu, president of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), the keynote speaker will deliver the first annual BAF Memorial Lecture. Ms. Allimadi who passed away suddenly on April 27, 2020 was laid to rest beside her late parents Mrs. Alice Lamunu Allimadi and prime minister E. Otema Allimadi, in Gulu, on May 2, 2020.

Invited guests and dignitaries include political leaders, cultural leaders, family members, and friends of Ms. Allimadi.
A series of activities will be undertaken during the launch event. In addition to the BAF memorial lecture, there will be a short memorial prayer, other dignitaries will deliver short tributes to Ms. Allimadi, all of which will be followed by a fundraiser for the foundation, and formal launch.
The foundation will focus on providing college and university scholarships to students with stellar academic credentials, especially young girls; the foundation will also empower young Ugandans in entrepreneurship, including in sustainable agriculture so that they can generate income and become financially independent. The initial focus will be on scholarships.
The BAF has been seeded by her siblings and the first scholarship recipient is Jennifer Akello, a first year student at Kyambogo University.
Early champion of People Power.
“Our beloved sister departed prematurely to join the ancestors on April 27, 2020. She was an absolutely fearless fighter against human rights abuses and tyranny in Uganda,” said Milton Allimadi, Barbara’s brother, and chairman of the board of directors of BAF. “Barbara made all of us braver. Many people became aware of Barbara’s courage when she led the protests against the police for the public sexual assault of Ms. Ingrid Turinawe in 2012. Thereafter, Barbara was arrested numerous times for leading protests against corruption and human rights abuses. Many people didn’t know that Barbara often visited political prisoners, securing legal representation for them, or purchasing food for them at her own expense.”
“This foundation will help produce future leaders, brave Ugandans, who will continue Barbara’s work,” Allimadi added. “The family hopes that all who were blessed to have known our beloved sister Barbara, or heard of her sacrifices for Uganda, will support the foundation. Aluta continua.”
At the time of her passing, Ms. Allimadi was Coordinator of International and Diaspora Affairs for Alliance for National Transformation (ANT).
Barbara was nurturing other young ladies to become leaders.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the launch will be attended by a few invited guests who will be asked to strictly observe the SOPs. Media will be invited to give full coverage of the occasion.
The general public is encouraged to follow the events on both social and traditional media. There will be a live stream on Facebook and a blow-by-blow coverage by the traditional media.
