Washington, DC — Earlier this morning, (around  8:30) a gunman in a gas mask shot at least 10 people, injuring at least 24, (no deaths have been reported) at the 36th Street station in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn. The shooter fled, causing several nearby schools to go into lockdown. The suspect, who remains at large, has been identified as a stocky 5-foot-5 Black male.

Giffords, the gun violence prevention group led by former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, condemned yet another senseless act of violence and called on our leaders to take action.

Former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords:

“Still reeling from the recent tragedy in Sacramento, we awoke this morning to yet another story of gun violence leading to chaos and trauma in yet another community—this time in Brooklyn, New York. Ten people going about their morning commutes were shot. Others were injured from smoke inhalation and the ensuing panic. Neighborhood schools went into lockdown. The Sunset Park community deserves better. All communities across our country deserve better.

“Yesterday, President Biden made a historic announcement about ghost guns in the White House Rose Garden. I’m grateful for his leadership on this issue, and yet, this is a complicated, multifaceted epidemic that is only growing in scope. We need more action from leaders at every level. We know what solutions work to save lives, and we will not rest until these solutions are fully enacted, implemented, and funded. The stakes are too high and the costs are too great to tolerate continued inaction.”

Giffords is a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives from gun violence that is led by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

New York Attorney General Letitia James also issued the following statement in response to this morning’s shooting in Sunset Park, Brooklyn:

“In the face of great challenge, New Yorkers always rise to help each other. Today was no different; New Yorkers responded with courage and compassion. This attack that injured 16 innocent New Yorkers and impacted countless more will simply not be tolerated. “My office is monitoring the situation and we remain in contact with the NYPD and our other partners in law enforcement. Our entire city is grateful to the transit workers, first responders, and everyday New Yorkers who acted quickly to help those in need.

“I urge anyone with information to please contact the NYPD at 1-800-577-TIPS.”

Editor’s Note: It is being reported that an unoccupied abandoned U-Haul van (with Arizona plates), associated with the attack in Sunset Park, has been located around five miles from the crime scene in Gravesend, Brooklyn. Reportedly, a bomb squad has been dispatched since it is suspected that the van may contain explosives. This story is still evolving.
