Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement on the passing of W. George Allen, a champion of the civil rights movement in South Florida:

It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of my friend and law partner, W. George Allen. We have lost a brilliant lawyer, a civil rights champion, and an awe-inspiring man who was a true pillar of our community.

“After growing up in a segregated community not far from where I grew up in Seminole County, Florida, George served as a special agent in the Counter Intelligence Corps for the U.S. Army before going on to become the first African American to earn his J.D. from the University of Florida Law School in 1962. For over five decades of his law career, George fought tirelessly to put an end to the injustice he experienced and witnessed as it affected the African American community. He made history on the front lines of the desegregation movement in Broward County schools, paving the way for countless others.

“George leaves behind a principled legacy of service to our country, the civil rights movement, and South Florida. I know his loss will be felt in Broward County for years to come and his contributions ingrained in history. I offer my deepest condolences to his children, Jonathan, Timothy, Frederick, and Amy Carole and the entire Allen family during this heartbreaking time. May he rest in peace.
