A rescreening of the historic human rights film Durban 400 will be held today, August 16, at Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Bldg, (on 2nr floor Gallery) at 125 St and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd. The film will be shown at 6:30 pm.
The film traces the actions of the “Durban 400,” a U.S. delegation to the World Conference Against Racism that was held in Durban, South Africa in 2001. The delegation fought o have the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade declared “a crime against humanity.” It was led by the December 12th Movement and the United Black Front. This historic declaration laid the international legal basis for Reparations.
During the Durban Declaration World Conference Against Racism, in 2001, the following statement was made:
“We acknowledge that slavery and the slave trade, inclduing the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, were appaling tragedies in the history of humanity. Not only because of their abhorrent barbarism but also in terms of their magnitude organized nature and especially their negation of the essence of the victims, and the slave trade are a crime against humanity and should always have been so, especially the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.”
