Gonzalez-Rojas: “The 34th Assembly District, incorporating parts of Jackson Heights, Corona, East Elmhurst, and Woodside, is the epicenter of the epicenter of the outbreak. More than 62% of our community are immigrants and we are in crisis.”

Jessica González-Rojas is running for a seat on the NY State Assembly to represent the 34 Assembly District.
Inequality can be fatal.
The Coronavirus has exposed that immigrants are among the most vulnerable New Yorkers because too many lack access to healthcare, adequate housing, or paid sick leave.
Many in our community are essential, frontline workers who have been exposed on the job. The impact has been staggering – Latinos are more than twice as likely to die from the Coronavirus as white people.
The 34th Assembly District, incorporating parts of Jackson Heights, Corona, East Elmhurst, and Woodside, is the epicenter of the epicenter of the outbreak. More than 62% of our community are immigrants and we are in crisis.
Immigrants, many of whom are essential employees and day laborers, are putting their lives at risk to ensure our city continues to operate during the pandemic. Undocumented immigrants largely do not have access to quality healthcare, are often exploited as workers, with immigrant women more vulnerable to sexual harassment and assault, and now — despite being hit hard by the COVID-19 crisis — much of the our community is left entirely without financial relief. To add insult to injury, immigrants are being targeted by ICE, and are at a higher risk of contracting COVID-19 in detention.
We need better representation in the State Assembly. We need a leader who will be aggressive in serving our immigrant community members and making transformative change. As a daughter of an immigrant father from Paraguay, fighting for immigrant justice has been a priority my entire life. I am running for State Assembly to be champion of our immigrant community.
