On February 28, Chicago will have important elections for ‘police accountability councils, in 22 police districts, in an effort to address brutal and deadly systemic institutional racial policing in the city.

The following is message from Frank Chapman, Executive Director of the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (NAARPR):

We’re issuing this call to all of our allied organizations, branches, friends and comrades.

As many of you already know, on February 28, Chicago will hold elections for police accountability councils in the 22 police districts that exist here in Chicago. District Council members will have certain powers, including the selection of members of the citywide commission.

The commission in turn will have a decisive say in making policy for the Chicago Police Department.

Stop and frisk, racial profiling, no knock raids, foot chases, gang databases – all can be eliminated through these elections, providing we win and get the right people in the right places.

It is because of the seriousness of this matter and because our country is presently in a severe democratic crisis that we’re asking you to come and join us between now and February 28 to help our 71 candidates in these races for District Council.

It’s a very special moment in our history, and we don’t want to miss this opportunity. Our movement has produced in the city of Chicago an ordinance that for the first time in the history of our country gives our people the democratic option to say who polices in our communities and how our communities are policed

Like all democratic gains won through the mass movement and the struggle for our freedom, we must fight to get it implemented. We got a law passed but that’s only half the battle. Come February 28, we have to elect the people to get the law enforced.

We have mobilized thousands of people in Chicago to be in the streets to make this happen. We have protested for over a period of almost 50 years to make this happen.

Now we’re asking you, our comrades outside of Chicago – from coast to coast, north to south – we’re asking you to come and join us in this battle of the century.

Come and join us to make sure that we end once and for all the police tyranny that has plagued our communities for more than a century.

Join us now in this great historic struggle.

Yours in united struggle –

Frank Chapman
