Two more Black Pasadena police officers have alleged they faced racial discrimination, harassment and retaliation from the city and police department, resulting in the second such claim against the city in the last two weeks.

At a press conference in front of the Pasadena Police Department Wednesday, Dec. 13, attorney Brad Gage announced Officer Jarvis Shelby has filed a claim against the city, alleging among other offenses that Pasadena Police Commander Bill Grisafe put him in a headlock, resulting in injuries.

Gage also represents Officer Taisyn Crutchfield, who on Nov. 30 filed a claim alleging she was subject to the same offenses after she was placed on administrative leave following what Crutchfield said was an attempt to de-escalate a situation involving another officer and the son of a man fatally shot by deputies.

A claim is the first step to a possible lawsuit against the city, which has 45 days to respond. According to Gage, his clients are seeking a combined total of $30 million for their claims.

Requests for comment from the Pasadena Police Department and the officers accused of wrongdoing in the suits were referred to the city’s public information officer.

“There are at least two sides to every story, and complainants are free to take their side to the media. The City of Pasadena cannot respond in a public debate regarding the claims, as they involve personnel matters, which are confidential under California law,” Pasadena Public Information Officer Lisa Derderian said. “With that said, personnel complaints against any Pasadena police officers are investigated thoroughly and fairly, and all personnel throughout our ranks are always held accountable for their actions when warranted.”
