The Bronx, NY — As early voting starts across the state, Congressman Jamaal Bowman once again is encouraging his supporters to do all they can for the Democratic nominee for Buffalo Mayor, India Walton.
In an email to supporters, Congressman Bowman, who has been fundraising for Walton since July, wrote about Walton: “As a Black woman, and a powerful progressive voice for our communities, India has constantly overcome instances of racism, sexism, and more in her fight to bring true representation to Buffalo for the first time in over five decades. And since her nomination, India has powered through waves of attacks from her opponent and even the Democratic establishment.“
India Walton stunned the political establishment in June when she defeated four-term incumbent Byron Brown to become the Democratic nominee for Mayor. Bowman endorsed Walton several days later.
“We need more than career politicians in office,” said Bowman, a former middle school principal. “India Walton was a school nurse, and plans to bring bold solutions to Buffalo such as permanently affordable housing, mental health responders, violence interruption programs, and worker-owned co-ops.”
India Walton is the Democratic nominee for Mayor of Buffalo. Born and raised on the East Side, India became a working single mother at just 14 years old. After the traumatic birth of her twins at just 24 weeks gestation, she became a registered nurse, working first in that same NICU and then in Buffalo public schools.
She then became the founding Executive Director of Buffalo’s Fruit Belt Community Land Trust, where she led community-directed development projects, modeling a democratic alternative to profit-driven housing development directed by billionaire real estate tycoons. She is a lifelong member of Bills Nation and a devoted tailgater.
