(New York, N.Y.)—Faced with a significant deficit, WBAI 99.5 FM NY has launched a Tower Fund Campaign this month to raise $250,000 to be able to continue broadcasting a signal within the greater metropolitan area.

“WBAI is facing an existential threat. This is not hyperbole. WBAI owes $150,000.00 to 4 Times Square which houses our transmitter, which enables us to transmit our signal to reach a 90-mile radius,” says WBAI General Manager Berthold Reimers. “But WBAI could be shut down at any moment and that would be the end of WBAI.”

For more than six decades, WBAI has been supported by listeners – and not corporate America – to be able to provide cutting-edge, progressive, community radio. However, with mounting rental expenses, the station is in desperate need for financial support.

“If you have donated to WBAI in the past or if you listen avidly to WBAI, this is the time to make any donation you can to keep your investment in free speech alive,” said Program Director Linda Perry.

“Listener support has kept WBAI on the air. With increasing media consolidation and corporate ownership, independent voices & perspectives are more important than ever, and that means our support must come from our community.”

Donations are tax-deductible. Listeners can also call (212) 209-2950 to donate to support the campaign.
