(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) – The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has welcomed a new envoy from the French Republic, His Excellency Olivier Plançon, who was accredited on Friday, October 3, during a ceremony held at the CARICOM Secretariat Headquarters in Georgetown, Guyana.
CARICOM Secretary-General, Dr. Carla Barnett noted the opportunity to deepen ties with France and expressed optimism that the relationship would lead to increased support for Haiti and the Gang Suppression Force (GSF). She commended France’s recent declaration recognising Palestinian statehood and underscored the unacceptable humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Dr. Barnett also acknowledged the pledge made by French President Emmanuel Macron to establish a French Haitian commission to examine the historical relationship between the two countries, including the impact of the substantial debt imposed on Haiti in exchange for its independence.
Ambassador Plançon expressed his honor at assuming the role, noting that his appointment coincides with the arrival of a high-level French delegation in Guyana for the opening of France’s new Embassy.
He affirmed his commitment to strengthening relations with CARICOM, describing France and CARICOM as “partners and neighbors.” He also acknowledged CARICOM’s pivotal role in addressing the ongoing crisis in Haiti.
Looking ahead, the Secretary-General anticipated meaningful outcomes at COP30, particularly in advancing climate resilience and sustainable development for Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
