French President Emmanuel Macron is admitting to France’s role in violently repressing Cameroonian independence movements during the colonial era.

In a Tuesday letter, to Cameroon President Paul Biya, Macron said, “a war had taken place in Cameroon, during which the colonial authorities and the French army exercised repressive violence of several kinds in certain regions of the country. It is up to me today to assume the role and responsibility of France in these events.”

Macron’s admission, which lacked a real apology, and no mention of Reparations, is coming as France sees its control of former African colonies slipping away. In recent years, France has been roundly rebuked by the Sahel countries of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, and countries like Senegal, Chad, and Ivory Coast are clearly moving away from their former ties with France.

Anti-French sentiments, among the citizenry of these countries, has exploded in the last several years as more come to the realization that France’s standard of living is based on the exploitation of these African countries—which are plagued with poverty.

Macron’s letter relayed the findings of of a joint Franco-Cameroonian commission which examined France’ violent repression of independence movements during the 1945 to 1971 time period.

In the letter, Macron also said: “The commission’s historians clearly established that a war took place in Cameroon, during which French colonial authorities and military forces committed various forms of violent repression in several regions of the country, a war that continued beyond 1960, with France’s support…”

The commission’s finding also investigated the crimes committed by the French-controlled post-independent government of Ahmadou Ahidjo. President Biya served as prime minister during the Ahidjo regime.
