Zimbabwe opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai’s health conditions have worsened and an associate warned supporters to brace “for the worst” as he continues colon cancer treatment in a South African hospital.
Tsvangirai led the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) opposition party against former president Robert Mugabe’s ZANU-PF government for decades and the two formed a power-sharing government in 2008 that lasted to 2013. As opposition leader Tsvangirai endured numerous arrests and brutal beatings by the security forces. Since revealing his ailment in 2016 Tsvangirai has lost considerable weight and appeared weakened in recently-released photographs.
After Mugabe was eased out of power, new president Emmerson Mnangagwa met with the opposition leader at his residence.
Tsvangirai founded MDC in 1999.
