56 people are dead and another 132 are missing after a boat, carrying 200 migrants, overturned off the coast of Yemen, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Many of the victims are believed to be Ethiopian.

In a statement, the IOM said, there is “urgent need to address the dangers of irregular migration along the Eastern Route. Every life lost is a powerful reminder of the human toll of irregular migration.”

From the start of 2025, the IOM has reported over 350 migrant deaths and disappearances in the Eastern Route area. However, the true number of deaths and disappearances are considered to be much higher.

IOM said greater cooperation is needed between regional and international actors to address the loss of life along migrant routes, including better search and rescue procedures. IOM is calling for “safe, regular pathways, strong protection systems, effective search and rescue operations, and accountability for smugglers and traffickers.”

IOM is also asking relevant authorities to tackle the root causes of migration. “Immediate lifesaving assistance and protection for vulnerable migrants must be prioritised, alongside targeted efforts to tackle the root causes of irregular migration.”
