Workers rights group, One Fair Wage, is against plan to use NYPD to enfoce social distancing in indoor dining settings.

In response to the news Thursday that Governor Cuomo suggested that indoor dining could resume in New York if a certain number of NYPD officers are allocated to enforce social distancing at restaurants, One Fair Wage released the following statement:

“The suggestion by Governor Cuomo that New York police officers could be deployed to supervise dining during a time of uprisings demanding an end to police killings of Black people is beyond egregious,” said Saru Jayaraman, President of One Fair Wage. “This ludicrous idea would only put Black tipped workers and customers at greater risk of violence at the hands of officers.

“Tipped workers’ income is already down by 75 percent due to a lack of COVID-19 relief — yet they’re being called back to work, and asked to enforce social distancing rules while being paid a subminimum wage. Instead of coming up with dangerous proposals to reopen restaurants even as we’re still in the thick of the pandemic, Governor Cuomo should commit to passing a full, fair wage for tipped workers to ensure they can pay rent and feed their families.”

A recent One Fair Wage report detailed a $8 wage gap between Black women and white men in NY dining floors. On Monday, dozens of NYC-based tipped workers went on strike and held a rally in Times Square, calling on Governor Cuomo to pass a full, fair wage.
