Welcome back, Wordlers! It’s the first Wordle Wednesday of May and you know what that means—a little puzzle within a puzzle. Not only will I walk you through today’s Wordle hints, clues, and final answer, but I’m also throwing in a bonus logic challenge for those of you who love flexing those brain muscles.
Wednesday Puzzle Challenge
There are three boxes—black, white, and blue. One contains gems.
- The black box says: “The statement on the white box is true.”
- The white box says: “Statements with the word ‘white’ are always true.”
- The blue box says: “The gems are in the white box.”
You know at least one of these statements is true, and at least one is false.
Which box contains the gems?

Spoiler Alert: The answer is revealed below, so don’t scroll if you’re still solving!
Wordle Breakdown
Let’s break down my guessing game today:
Starting Word: CRATE
A solid opener. It didn’t yield much, but it helped eliminate key letters.
Second Guess: BASIC
This helped a lot, narrowing down the vowel and removing letters like B, S, and C. From here, I was down to about 8 viable words.
Third Guess: FANCY
This one wasn’t bad, but didn’t help much. I think I just liked the feel of it more than the logic behind it.
Fourth Guess: MACHO
Lucky strike! With the ‘A’ and ‘C’ already in play and some smart process of elimination, I landed the correct answer.
Wordle Competitive Score
Let’s score it the Erik Kain way:
- 1st guess: CRATE
- 2nd guess: BASIC
- 3rd guess: FANCY
- 4th guess: MACHO
That’s 4 guesses, which earns me 0 points.
Wordle Bot also solved it in 4 today, so we tie. No point change.
May Tally (so far)
- You: 8 points
- Wordle Bot: 2 points

Wordle Word Origin
Macho has Spanish origins, derived from the word for “male.” It comes from Latin “masculus”, the same root as “masculine.” Over time, the word took on cultural and sometimes comical overtones, used to describe exaggerated displays of masculinity.
From movie characters to gym bros, “macho” has become shorthand for a particular tough-guy image—sometimes celebrated, sometimes mocked.

Final Thoughts
Today’s Wordle wasn’t too tricky, but it did require some careful thinking to avoid falling for red herrings. Words like “manly,” “burly,” or “rugged” may have come to mind, but only MACHO fit all the criteria.
And don’t forget to take a crack at the box riddle above! I’ll share the answer in tomorrow’s article.
