The Woman of the Hour ending has actually left a lot of the audience with goosebumps and sheer confusion as we saw Amy gasping for breath and then fading into the void. Woman of the Hour is an American Crime Thriller film that came out in the year 2023 starring Anna Kendrick, who also made her debut in direction with the movie. The movie is based on a true story depicting the appearance of Rodney Alcala, a serial killer who appeared in a television show named The Dating Game after murdering at least 5 women in his very apartment. Daniel Zovatto played the role of Alcala who wins a date with the contestant of the show Cheryl Bradshaw. His appearance in the show made him famous with the name “The Dating Game Killer.” The movie was written by Ian MacDonald and produced by a group of producers, namely Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, J.D. Liftshitz, and Raphael Margules. The cast also includes Nicollette Robinson and Tony Hale. 

Woman of the Hour Ending Explained: Overall Plot

After committing around 5 murders in his apartment, Rodney Alcala, the serial killer instead of hiding in the shadows, openly appeared on the television show, The Dating Game, in order to find his new victim. The actress and host of the show Cheryl Bradshaw, unknown to the dark reality of Alcala, chooses him to be her winning date, exposing herself to the threat and adding to the suspense of the movie.

After the filming of the dating show is done, Cheryl and Rodney visit a bar together for drinks when the young actress immediately sees the suspicious nature and decides to end the date before time and secretly signals the server of the bar not to serve the next round. While walking out of the bar, Rodney insists on walking her to her car and then asks Cheryl for her phone number, to which she gives him the wrong number but gets caught when he asks to recite the number, and she can’t. 

Cheryl tells Rodney she does not want anything to do with him and he chases her to the car. Just when we thought Cheryl would not be able to escape, the crew members of the show come to her rescue, which forces him to walk away, and Cheryl drives away unharmed.

Woman of the Hour Ending Explained: Climax 

The movie ends with the story of Amy, a homeless teenager, who ends up becoming the next victim of Rodney, one year after his dating show appearance. He approached Amy as a photographer who wished to take her pictures and took her to a secluded place where she was assaulted both physically and sexually. Amy, in hopes of getting a chance to run away, acts as if she consented to the attack and urges him to take her to his home. She gets the opportunity she was waiting for when they stop at a gas station, and she manages to escape to a nearby restaurant once he goes into the station, alarming everyone and leading to his arrest. Just as we thought she escaped a fatal disaster, the closing of the scene depicts her gasping and then fading into a void.

According to Anne, the chords resolving at the end of Into the Woods and the last “I wish” managed to depict there is no definite ending to the movie. Amy survived but she would still have to deal with the trauma and pain inflicted by Rodney on her just like all the other victims and the families of those who lost their lives similar to the ambiguity which was evoked by the final closing scene of the movie. 

The real Rodney Alcala was then bailed out of Jail and ended up being arrested again after he committed two more murders.
