On the eve of President Biden’s visit to New York City to meet with Mayor Adams to discuss gun violence and how local and federal governments can work together to address this issue, Scott Roberts, Senior Director of Criminal Justice Campaigns at Color of Change issued the following statement:

“The safest communities have the most resources, not the most police. This is what President Biden needs to remember when he meets with Mayor Adams to discuss public safety later this week.

“Mayor Adams is returning to the same failed playbook of centering police in public safety policies — this will only lead to the same discriminatory, violent tactics that disproportionately target Black communities. Communities in New York City and across the country are rightly demanding that elected officials expand our public safety options, invest in education, jobs, affordable housing and mental health services.

“We urge President Biden and Mayor Adams to listen to their demands.”

As the leading criminal justice expert at the nation’s largest online racial justice organization, Scott Roberts has led local, statewide, and national campaigns to reimagine public safety and reform racist policing.
