Why Are Amazon Workers Going on Strike? Key Reasons Explained

Amazon Warehouse workers in seven locations in the US went on to strike during this busy Christmas season stating that the company is unfair in its treatment of employees. The locations where workers walked off the job include New York, Atlanta, and San Francisco.  The workers who are on strike only represent a small fraction of the total employees of the e-commerce giant. Why Amazon workers decided to strike

Various factors led to the ongoing strike by Amazon workers. One of the major reasons behind the strike is wages. The workers are demanding higher wages from the Amazon company. The Amazon workers want agreement from the company that it will ensure higher wages for the work. The workers also need health care benefits and good retirement plans.

Another major factor that led to the strike was unsafe working conditions. The safety of the workers is a major concern in the Amazon facilities. The workers have said about the high workload on them.  The workers at the amazon also need a good job security. The workers have a fear of losing their jobs. The company does not promote unions for its workers which makes workers even difficult to present their concerns.  There were efforts from the part of workers to create a union for them but the company resisted it with negotiations with the workers.

Future of the strike

The company has responded to this strike by stating that the workers who are on this strike are employed by third-party contractors. Amazon has also stated that the strike has not affected the operations of the company and the delivery will take place at the right time during this holiday season.

Although the strikers want to negotiate with the company, The company does not respond positively. The outcome of the ongoing strike by the workers remains uncertain.  If the strike becomes successful, it could change the policies of the company by providing workers with higher wages and other additional benefits. If the workers cannot negotiate with the company further strikes demanding higher wages are less likely to happen. 

However, the workers want the company to come to the bargaining table and understand the pressure of the employees and its effect on their health. One of the employees from Amazon has stated that the more work they do the company is expecting more work from them. Though the strike is ongoing, the Amazon facilities are operating without affecting its delivery services.
