Many Texans, and other Americans, are furious with Texas Senator Ted Cruz, who abandoned Texas to go vacationing with his family to Cancun, Mexico–while the Lone Star State is in the middle of a winter weather crisis.

For the last several days, as many as 4 million Texans have been living without electricity, and in many cases heat during this historic winter storm. Some 500,000 are said to be still without power. Many have no water. At least 21 people have died.

In a statement to CNN, Cruz said this when asked about his decision to take his family on a vacation during the crisis in his home state:

“With school cancelled for the week, our girls asked to take a trip with friends. Wanting to be a good dad, I flew down with them last night and am flying back this afternoon. My staff and I are in constant communication with state and local leaders to get to the bottom of what happened in Texas. We want our power back, our water on, and our homes warm. My team and I will continue using all our resources to keep Texans informed and safe.”

Cruz has been noted for criticizing other lawmakers for taking vacations at the wrong time.

Just last December, Cruz vilified Austin Mayor Steve Adler for going to Mexico, during the COVID pandemic. In a tweet he said, “Hypocrites. Complete and utter hypocrites. And don’t forget @MayorAdler who took a private jet with eight people to Cabo and WHILE IN CABO recorded a video telling Austinites to ‘stay home if you can…this is not the time to relax.'”

Sometimes Cruz attacked people who weren’t even taking a vacation.

In 2014, Cruz attacked President Barack Obama for attending a fundraiser. At that time, he said, “I think the President should actually stand up and do his job as commander-in-chief, should spend less time on the golf course and more time doing the job to which he was elected.”

Senator Cruz’s tone-deaf comments regarding why he went to Mexico while his Texas constituents are back home freezing and suffering is indicative of the lack of concern too many lawmakers have for those they supposedly serve.

Reportedly, one advocacy group paid for a billboard sign to be placed near Cruz’s home saying: “Texas Froze. Ted Fled.”
