The US Congress is advancing a bill to reexamine their relationship with South Africa–that reportedly will lead to the sanctioning of some African National Congress officials.
The US has been at odds with South Africa ever since it denounced Israel on genocide charges, regarding the ongoing war in Gaza, that has killed conservatively around 80,000 Palestinians. Because of South Africa’s advocacy, a formal legal charge of genocide is now being litigated in the (ICJ) International Court of Justice.
Brazil, a member of the BRICS group of nations, recently joined South Africa’s ICJ genocide case against Israel. Both sides of the political spectrum in the United States have opposed the ICJ genocide case against Israel.
The US House Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday voted 34-16 to send the bill to the full House of Representatives. To be signed into law, the bill must pass both the House and Senate.
South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has stated that discussions are underway with Washington, on trade negotiations, as South Africa also faces an impending 30 percent tariff from the Trump Administration.
