Former Congresswoman Karen Bass has been elected as the first female mayor of Los Angeles and the second Black mayor, since former Mayor Tom Bradley.

Among those celebrating the historic milestone is the Women’s March Action organization. Emiliana Guereca, Founder and President, Women’s March Action said the following after Bass victory:

“Women prevailed this Election Day! We’re thrilled to welcome Karen Bass as the first woman mayor of Los Angeles.

Karen Bass’ victory is important to the people of Los Angeles because she is one of us. She will fight for women’s rights, build bridges, help house the homeless, secure federal dollars and bring fresh energy to City Hall. She is going to be a great role model and will make us proud.

While the race was close, Bass was always going to win because what she lacked in money she has in leadership. Her opponent Caruso unleashed 100 MILLION dollars on L.A., and we’ll see the repercussions of that for years to come. The obscene amount of money in this race is not good for local politics.

Karen Bass is not only the most qualified candidate; she is also the first woman and the first Black woman mayor of America’s second most populous city. At a time when women’s rights are under attack, Angelinos showed up to ensure that our reproductive rights get enshrined through Prop 1 and the election of Bass.

We saw similar momentum across the country, including the four other states where ballot measures focused on reproductive rights passed and with the history-making number of women elected to offices locally and nationally.

We look forward to working with Mayor-Elect Bass to move Los Angeles in the right direction for women and for us all.”
