(Washington D.C.) – The African American Mayors Association (AAMA) applauds President Biden’s plan to reduce gun violence throughout the nation and enthusiastically supports him in this initiative. The President’s multi-pronged, holistic approach – from increasing background checks and the use of “red flag” laws to holding the gun industry accountable for its role in gun violence – will help to attack the deadly scourge of gun violence at its core.

President Biden’s plan will build upon and strengthen last year’s historic Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the most significant gun violence reduction legislation enacted in nearly 30 years, by moving the U.S. as close to universal background checks as possible without additional legislation.

“Gun violence has plagued our communities for too long and although we’ve made progress, it is not enough. During my tenure as Mayor and President of AAMA, I’ve seen too many thoughts and prayers, but not enough action. I applaud the President for continuing to stay vigilant on this issue and taking action.” said AAMA President and Little Rock Mayor, Frank Scott, Jr. “As mayors across the nation we look forward to supporting and working with President Biden to reduce gun violence across our cities however we can.”

The African American Mayors Association (AAMA) is the only organization dedicated to representing over 500 African American mayors across the United States. AAMA seeks to empower local leaders for the benefit of their citizens. The role of the AAMA includes taking positions on public policies that impact the vitality and sustainability of cities; providing mayors with leadership and management tools; and creating a forum for member mayors to share best practices related to municipal management.
