Darryl Ross’ Mother On Police Shooting: “They Killed My Baby”

ST. LOUIS — A teenager was shot dead by police officers on Sunday night outside of a gas station in Old North St. Louis. Darryl Ross, 16, was armed and running away, police and family members all say.

But there’s little more they agree on. Their accounts otherwise diverge on key points: whether officers identified themselves as they approached the teen; whether the teen’s mother was there at the time of the shooting; and whether his gun was out during the encounter.

“They killed my baby,” said Darryl’s mother, Jukita Johnson, below.

Civil rights leaders called on police to provide more information on Monday.

“What’s critical is getting as much footage of the shooting out as possible as swiftly as possible,” said Adolphus Pruitt, the president of the city’s chapter of the NAACP. Read more.
