UNOWAS REPRESENTATIVE CONDEMNS SATURDAY TERRORIST ATTACK IN BURKINA FASO

Saturday’s terrorist acts follow two attacks which occured on Christmas and Christmas Eve. On Christmas Eve, 35 civilians and seven soldiers were killed in the village of Arbinda, in the northeast Soum territory along the border with Mali. This was followed by an attack on Christmas which killed eleven soldiers.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations’ Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Mohamed Ibn Chambas, expresses his outrage and condemnation of the terrorist act on a bus in Burkina Faso, on Saturday, which killed at least 14 people.

The attacks occurred in the Sourou province, in northern Burkina Faso near the border with Mali. Seven children were reportedly among the 14 people who were killed. Nineteen others were wounded when the bus carrying students ran over an improvised explosive device on Saturday morning.

Special Representative Chambas extends his heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and to the Government and people of Burkina Faso.
