As we approach the festive season in Southeast Queens, City Council candidate Latoya LeGrand, founder of the nonprofit organization Projects II Projects serving Southeast Queens, shares her vision for a safer, more united District 28 where families of all backgrounds can thrive together. In our wonderfully diverse community, from South Jamaica to Richmond Hill, the holiday season brings different celebrations, traditions, and gatherings that make our district uniquely vibrant.

“The strength of Southeast Queens lies in our diversity and how we come together as one community, especially during the holiday season,” says LeGrand, whose organization has been at the forefront of community development and support initiatives. “Whether you’re celebrating Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Lunar New Year, or simply gathering with loved ones, safety and community support must remain our top priorities.”

LeGrand’s experience leading Projects II Projects has given her firsthand insight into the community’s needs. She emphasizes the importance of looking out for our neighbors during this busy season. “When we support our local businesses along Sutphin Boulevard, Liberty Avenue, Rockaway Boulevard, and Guy R. Brewer Boulevard, we’re not just shopping – we’re investing in our community’s future. These small business owners are our neighbors, and their success is our success. Each of these vital corridors represents the heart of our community’s commerce and culture.”

The candidate outlines several key safety recommendations for the holiday season:

• Keep porch lights on and watch out for package deliveries to prevent theft

• Check on elderly neighbors during cold weather and help clear their walkways

• Support local businesses by shopping in the neighborhood

• Attend community events and celebrations to strengthen neighborhood bonds

• Report any suspicious activity to local authorities

• Practice fire safety with holiday decorations and cooking

• Drive carefully, especially during winter weather and night-time celebrations

“Our local businesses, places of worship, and community centers are the heartbeat of Southeast Queens,” LeGrand notes. “Through my work with Projects II Projects, I’ve seen how these institutions provide not just services, but spaces where neighbors become family. During the holidays, these connections become even more important.”

Looking ahead to 2025, LeGrand envisions a District 28 where every resident feels safe, supported, and represented. “Whether you’ve lived here for generations or recently made Southeast Queens your home, your voice matters. Our diversity is our strength, and together we can build a safer, stronger community.”

As the Spring 2025 City Council election approaches, LeGrand encourages residents to stay engaged in local politics. “Community safety isn’t just about police presence – it’s about neighbors knowing neighbors, supporting local businesses, and working together for positive change. When we vote, we’re not just choosing a representative; we’re choosing the future of our community.”

The candidate will be hosting several community gatherings throughout the holiday season, providing opportunities for residents to share their concerns and ideas for improving neighborhood safety and community relations. Many of these events will be coordinated through Projects II Projects, leveraging the organization’s deep community connections across the major corridors of Southeast Queens.

“As we celebrate with our families and welcome the New Year, let’s remember that our diversity makes Southeast Queens special,” LeGrand concludes. “Together, we can ensure that every family, every business, and every resident has the opportunity to thrive in a safe and supportive community.”
