Monday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is now “at a breaking point,” as the Israeli government is killing any chance of a two-state solution with their continued brutal occupation.

Addressing a high level three-day conference, of the General Assembly, Guterres spoke about the need for urgent action now.
“With every passing day, trust is slipping. Institutions are weakened. And hopes are dashed…For decades, Middle East diplomacy has been far more process than peace,” he said. “Words, speeches, declarations may not have much meaning to those on the ground. They have seen it before. They have heard it before. Meanwhile, destruction and annexation bulldoze ahead.”
The Secretary-General warned that a two-state solution was the only peaceful path forward. He asked any opposing this view to offer the alternative.
“What is the alternative?” he asked. “ A one-State reality where Palestinians are denied equal rights, and forced to live under perpetual occupation and inequality? A one-State reality where Palestinians are expelled from their land? That is not peace. That is not justice. And that is not acceptable.”
Gutteres also addressed the situation in Gaza.
“Gaza has descended into a cascade of catastrophes,” Gutteres said. “Tens of thousands dead. Virtually the entire population displaced many times over. The shadow of starvation looming over everyone.”
The Secretary-General also renewed his call for an immediate permanent ceasefire; the releasing of all hostages; and access for Palestinians to humanitarian aid.
In his closing remarks, Gutteres implored all parties to work harder for peace.
“This conflict cannot be managed. It must be resolved. We cannot wait for perfect conditions. We must create them. We cannot defer peace efforts until suffering becomes unbearable. We must act before it is too late.”
