On Wednesday, the United Nation’s Security Council is rejecting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) declaration of erecting a rival government in Sudan, in the areas they control.
The Security Council said the RSF actions are “a direct threat to Sudan’s territorial integrity” and warned that this RSF attempt would lead to more fragmentation in Sudan; would intensify the ongoing fighting; and would make the humanitarian crisis much worse.
The Security Council is calling on the RSF and Sudanese Armed Forces to restart peace talks. They also called on the parties to move toward transitioning to a civilian-led government and democratic elections as this is the only pathway to “a peaceful, stable and prosperous future.”
The Council mentioned the Council’s resolution 2736 (2024), which requires the RSF to end the fighting, stop its seige of El Fasher, and to reduce the tensions which surrounds Darfur, where famine and extreme hunger are major problems. Council members also called for “unhindered humanitarian access” in El Fasher.
