During an appearance on NTV’s On The Spot, a popular Ugandan television program a former senior minister in Gen. Yoweri Museveni’s regime criticized the recent election-related massacre of unarmed civilians by state security agencies.
On Nov. 18, after the arrest of leading candidate in Uganda’s presidential election Bobi Wine was arrested spontaneous protests erupted throughout the country and armed forces shot and killed several dozens of unarmed civilians. The death estimates range from 54 to 100.
“We are not in the best of state,” Nuwe Amanya Mushega, who once held portfolios in various ministries–defense, local government, education, and public service–said. “This violence which is going on is not nice.”
The interview was on Dec. 10 with host Patrick Kamara. Mushega was once a leading figure in Museveni’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) ruling party. “It’s painful. Our leaders should come out and condemn it and those who have done it should be punished,” he said, of the massacre.
