A destitute in Gulu town collects food remnants thrown by residents
As Uganda’s dictator President Yoweri Museveni extends lock-down for another 21 days, Gulu residents are facing food shortage; street children, shoe menders, people with disabilities and the elderly are facing hunger.
Politicians now use food distribution, including Gulu district Chairman, Martin Ojara Mapenduzi, one of the district Task Force of COVID-19, and gave about 400 sex workers food items believed to be targeting block votes from them in 2021 parliamentary polls.
UGANDA-GULU: The Gulu District Chairman Martin Ojara Mapenduzi in his narrative, reveals he considered giving food items to the 400 Gulu sex workers as an avenue to get their statistics in order to dissuade them from the trade and to stop them from accessing the cargo truck drivers.
Martin Ojara dismissed allegations that the Gulu District authority used COVID-19 distributed food to the sex workers to ward off the threats from sex workers said they will expose photos of top politicians in town who are their customers in social media if the Gulu District authority failed to give them food items.
Michael Lakony, the Chairman of Amuru District Local Government criticized his Gulu counterpart for giving food assistance to about 400 prostitutes in town, saying the act alone implies that he is a victim of the threat. It means that Ojara is covering his deed.
“I would not tolerate prostitution in our district of Amuru. Should any woman come out openly that they should be given food item, then they should know that we are going to beat them like the sex workers from Elegu who were beaten two months ago”.
Major Santos Okot Lapolo, the Gulu District Residence Commissioner also threw his weight behind Amuru District Chairman Lakony, condemning the act of giving Gulu prostitute hand out.
“I condemned those who have given food items to sex workers. Prostitution is not tolerated in Acholi culture.” Major Okot Lapolo urged.
Julius Peter Obwona, retired former Headmaster of Awere Primary School says the cultural values in the past is that when epidemic or pandemic happens, the whole homestead would be put under quarantine, such that special groups of people can be treated differently.
For example, when Measles outbreak is identified in a home, the affected people will be put in quarantine (Okutu- lango) thorn tree will be put as a sign to block the way leading to the affected home. In that way you control the spread of that disease to the community.
“I would say in a nutshell, prostitution was not there. Even contracting mere STDs in the past, people would even shun the person who contracted it. They would say; “don’t touch me”. So what about a prostitute? Would she be treated equally?” Obwona urged.
Black Star News Correspondent caught up with Muzee Ochola Oniba, 92 years old and a father to many children whose ground grandchildren measures in hundreds, is one of the polygamous elder in Acholi traditional way.
Question: What do you say about the act of giving special groups of women food items, especially the 400 sex workers in Gulu town and what is your opinion?
Answer: I am now 92 years old, in my free opinion as a person, first of all I am a Christian, I am a strong political activist. If women belief that their bodies are to be commercialize, then what is the purpose of God’s creation that men and women should multiply and file the earth?
If a woman is to sell her body, she will bear the child and teach her to be a prostitute, God who created the world punished Sodom and Gomorra because of adultery and homosexuality evils. We should not allow such women to sell their body in the strongest terms.
The prostitutes promised the Gulu District officials that if they are given food items, then they will not go back to the streets. Otherwise by getting and receiving food items to keep them healthy and later they will go to the same sex worker, I don’t think it was the right thing.
If the authority give them food items because of fear since the prostitutes threatened to expose them for their sexual immorality, then it would be their selfish egos and immorality. This will expose people of authority who do not know their value in society. This is Acholi and our norms.
As a Christian for example, Jesus Christ helped a woman caught in adultery who was about to be stoned to death because of the sin. He actually forgave her sin when he said; ‘your sin has been forgiven’. In due respect of Jesus Christ, he again relieved Marry Magdalena out of prostitution and she remained a loyal follower of Christ.
Did our prostitutes in town promised never to go back to prostitution, or did the authority defend others who had been involved in the trade of prostitution?
This food items which were given to sex workers as human being is not bad, but if they can leave this kind of attitude, it could be okay to lead them to realize the dangers of sexual immorality and the culture of sexual values in society. Sexual values in society says they should marry and produce healthy children of high value.
