Dictator Gen. Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa Yoweri has vowed that he will “fight” Ugandans resisting the violence that erupted after his regime arrested leading presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi.
Kyagulanyi, a member of Parliament and musical star better known as Bobi Wine, was arrested Wednesday, sparking protests all over the country. The total death at the hands of police and security forces is undetermined but in Kampala alone 16 bodies were taken to Mulago Hospital.
“Time will reach where people will fear even touching a National Resistance Movement shirt on the roadside. If they want to fight, that is the area we know best,” the dictator, who continues campaigning while the leading challenger remains detained, said at his own rally at Mayor’s gardens in Kotido District, Karamoja region.
Gen. Museveni is presently campaigning to extend his 34 years regime. His opponents on the opposition side are all inside the cooler because police arrested them and charged them with bogus charges of violating Covid19 restrictions limiting crowds to no more than 200. The restrictions are applied only to the opposition. In addition to Bobi Wine, also arrested was Patrick Oboi Amuriat of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).
Meanwhile the European Union (EU) condemned the security forces in Uganda for using brutal force against peaceful protestors and called for safety of all presidential candidates and their supporters without discrimination. “Saddening loss of life in violent incidents in Uganda. The government must ensure the safety of all election candidates and their supporters, whatever political affiliation. Respect for democratic rights and rejection of violence are essential in wake of elections,” said Ambassador Joseph Borrell Fontelles who is the high representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and security policy.
Also retired Colonel, Dr. Kizza Besigye, the former presidential candidate of the FDC who is widely believed to have defeated Museveni in the last three presidential elections—Museveni simply refused to yield power— condemned the barbarous attacks against civilians by the security forces. He called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to act on the petition by thousands of Ugandans calling for action against the regime leaders for continuous violations of human rights.
Meanwhile the city mortuary located at Mulago Hill is overwhelmed with dead bodies ferried there by the military. Reportedly today 16 bodies were taken to the mortuary, and more are expected. Dr. Moses Byaruhanga, the police chief forensic pathologist, said the deaths were caused by gunshots, and suffocation from tear gas. Others were killed by hit-and-run drivers.
