A forum with Lawrence Hamm, candidate for U.S. Senator hosted by The North Jersey Black Caucus will be held today, Wednesday, January 31, 2024, 6:30pm at American Legion Post 58, 151 Forest Avenue, Englewood, NJ.
“I will be in Englewood tonight to discuss my my senate campaign and platform. However, I will begin my presentation with a moment of silence for the three U.S. soldiers killed in Jordan this past weekend,” Lawrence Hamm, Chairman, People’s Organization For Progress, and U.S. Senate candidate stated.
The three soldiers killed were Sgt. William Jerome Rivers, Spc. Kennedy Ladon Sanders, and Spc. Breonna Alexsondria Moffet. All three were African-Americans. Sgt. Rivers was originally from Willingboro, New Jersey.
“I am deeply saddened and troubled by the deaths of these soldiers. I extend my deepest sympathies and condolences to their families,” Hamm stated. “Their deaths underscore my concern about U.S. military involvement in the Middle East. The situation there is beginning to feel like Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan all over again.”
“I call upon President Biden not to start a war or to engage in actions that will lead to war with Iran. I believe that the majority of Americans do not want to see our country embroiled in another never ending war with Iran or any other country,” he said. “I urge the president to exercise caution and restraint and to use the tools of diplomacy to resolve the problems in the region. I believe that an escalation of military conflict there will lead to a much wider regional conflagration and possibly world war.”
“As I see it, right now the driver of the escalation of conflict in the region is Israel’s war against Palestinians. It is imperative that President Biden use every means necessary to bring about a permanent ceasefire now. This is the key to the de-escalation of conflict in the region,” Hamm added. “The Biden administration should halt all military aid to Israel until this war comes to an end.”
“In addition, the U.S. should end its pause in aid to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) and release all funds earmarked for the agency,” he said.
The pause was initiated in response to Israel’s accusation that 12 UNRWA workers aided Hamas in the October 7th attack. As a result, the U.S. and other western nations have paused their aid to UNRWA. The United Nations has terminated the contracts of those twelve and is currently investigating the matter. UNRWA has 30,000 employees.
“One of the greatest humanitarian crisis of our times is taking place in Gaza as a result of Israel’s genocidal war there which our nation has helped to fund,” he said.
“In about four months 27,000 Palestinians have been slaughtered, 70,000 have been injured, thousands are buried under rubble of bombed out buildings, and more than one million have been displaced,” Hamm said. “Those who are still living are being starved to death. People are literally eating grass and drinking dirty water. Sickness and disease are spreading.”
“In the face of such apocalyptic conditions how can the Biden administration stop the flow of humanitarian aid. This is a callous disregard for the pain and suffering of the Palestinian people,” Hamm added. “This pause not only holds up current aid. It places future aid in jeopardy. Such actions undermine the standing of the United States in the eyes of the world.”
