WASHINGTON, D.C. — Public Citizen co-presidents Lisa Gilbert and Robert Weissman issued the following statement in response to the news that President Trump started a war on Iran.
“Last night Donald Trump unilaterally started a reckless, illegal, and unconstitutional war on Iran that makes the world a much, much more dangerous place.
“The Constitution is crystal clear that only Congress can decide when and whether our nation goes to war.
“Congress must act immediately and vote on existing resolutions from Senator Kaine and Representatives Khanna and Massie to prevent President Trump from dragging us into a protracted war that could put millions of lives at risk.
“We all know, or should know, the lessons of Afghanistan and Iraq. Early, apparent military ‘victories’ can easily turn into drawn out wars in which no one wins but civilians lose the most.
“Congress must fulfill its constitutionally mandated role and act immediately to end Trump’s illegal and reckless war.”
