Donald Trump is attacking the Smithsonian museums for supposedly focusing too much on “how bad Slavery was.”

Trump made the remarks as he is reviewing Smithsonian exhibits for their adherence to what he calls “Americanism.” Trump apparently wants museums, and universities, to focus on his whitewashed view of the positive history of America.
The Organization of American Historians (OAH) has declared their “deep concern and dismay” at Trump’s “unprecedented” reviews of Smithsonian exhibits noting that “no president has the legitimate authority to impose such a review” adding that “it is particularly distressing to see this effort of historical censorship and sanitizing tied to the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding.”
In a social media rant, Trump said, “The Smithsonian is OUT OF CONTROL, where everything discussed is how horrible our Country is, how bad Slavery was, and how unaccomplished the downtrodden have been — Nothing about Success, nothing about Brightness, nothing about the Future. We are not going to allow this to happen, and I have instructed my attorneys to go through the Museums, and start the exact same process that has been done with Colleges and Universities where tremendous progress has been made,” Trump added. “This Country cannot be WOKE, because WOKE IS BROKE. We have the ‘HOTTEST’ Country in the World, and we want people to talk about it, including in our Museums.”
In March, Trump signed an executive order calling for the removal of all “improper ideology” from Smithsonian museums.
However, Trump was singing a different tune, on Slavery, when he visited the Smithsonian’ National Museum of African American History and Culture, in 2017. During that visit, Trump said the museum was a “truly great museum.” He praised abolitionists like Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, and Fredrick Douglass and said the museum was “a meaningful reminder of why we have to fight bigotry, intolerance and hatred in all of its very ugly forms.”
Trump is focusing his reviews on eight museums. They are: The National Museum of African American History and Culture, The National Museum of American History, The National Museum of Natural History, The National Museum of the American Indian, The Smithsonian American Art Museum, The National Air and Space Museum, the National Portrait Gallery and The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.
