BROOKLYN (October 9, 2025) –Thursday, Higher Heights President and CEO, Glynda C. Carr issued the following statement in response to news of the indictment of New York Attorney General Letitia James:
“Last week James Comey, this week Letitia James.
“The Trump administration’s pursuit of New York Attorney General Letitia James is not an investigation; it’s an act of political vengeance.
“As the Trump administration escalates its campaign of political payback against anyone who dares to challenge it, Higher Heights is sounding the alarm. This is a disturbing abuse of power and an effort to punish a Black woman leader who has stood firmly for truth, accountability, and the rule of law.
“What’s happening to AG James is not justice; its retribution, plain and simple.
“Let’s be clear: Letitia James is being targeted not for breaking the law, but for upholding it. She held Trump accountable in court and proved that no one, no matter how powerful, is above the law. Now he’s weaponizing the Justice Department to punish her for doing her job.
“This isn’t new. Trump has a long, ugly history of going after Black women who stand in the way his agenda, from Federal Reserve Board Governor Dr. Lisa Cook to Librarian of Congress, Carla Hayden; using his platform to demean, threaten, and discredit them. It’s the same script: attack, intimidate, and attempt to silence.
“Our nation cannot function when the rule of law bends to one man’s grudges. Attorneys General and prosecutors must have the autonomy to pursue truth, not the fear of retaliation when that truth is inconvenient.
“AG Letitia James embodies the strength and moral courage that Black women bring to leadership every day. Higher Heights stands shoulder to shoulder with her. We refuse to let this moment go unchecked.
“We will continue to monitor these developments and will not sit idly by and allow our justice system to be turned into a tool of personal revenge.”
