WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. attorney for New Jersey Alina Habba announced on social media that congresswoman LaMonica Mclver was indicted on Tuesday for “forcibly impeding and interfering with federal law enforcement officers.” The incident occurred while Mclver was conducting an oversight visit to an ICE facility.

In response to the indictment, Lisa Gilbert, co-president of Public Citizen, issued the following statement:
“This malicious indictment is a miscarriage of justice delivered via tweet, and a thinly-veiled attempt by the Trump administration to punish elected officials who are providing a check against this administration’s lawlessness and cruelty. Indicting a sitting member of congress for simply doing her job is retaliation not law enforcement, and a blatant attempt to chill oversight.
“This kind of activity is political intimidation, pure and simple, and it is a direct threat to democracy that we cannot ignore. We must speak out loudly against this authoritarian overreach.”
